About Us
The Fowlerville District Library Seed Library is a collection of open-pollinated and heirloom seeds that you can borrow to plant and grow at home. By saving seeds as a community we help create local seed stocks that are better acclimated to our climate and which support an abundant and genetically diverse landscape. We support all gardeners, and help you learn how to grow, harvest, and save seeds. Check at the library for programs and materials on how to create, maintain and have a successful garden.
The Seed Library is an important library resource that helps to promote food independence, seed diversity, maintaining heritage varieties, and the saving of seeds that are adapted to the local climate and growing conditions. Seed libraries share the wonder of growing your own food- or plant- from seed. Seed saving and sharing is a money saving, sustainable practice that is hundreds of years old, connects us to the past as well as the earth, and is a great way to give back to the community. We ask that seeds are “returned” by harvesting seeds from a plant or two that you grow. Seeds can be returned with your other library materials. Have seeds to donate? We will happily take those too! Donated seeds will help to add diversity to our collection. |
